ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Crowley's Ridge men's basketball student-athlete Cole Nichols has been selected the American Midwest Conference (AMC) Emil S. Liston Scholarship Award nominee.
Named in honor of the NAIA's first executive secretary and the driving force behind the NAIA Men's Basketball National Championship, the Emil S. Liston Award recognizes one junior men's and one junior women's basketball student-athlete who have demonstrated outstanding academic and athletic achievement.
A junior from Dexter, Mo., Nichols has excelled both in the classroom and on the court throughout his collegiate career.
Academically, Nichols has maintained a 3.88 GPA while pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. His success in the classroom earned him AMC Academic All-Conference honors.
During his Business Communication course, Nichols served as the group leader for a Written Communication Presentation Project focused on the impact of social media on business.
"During this project, Cole truly became the last man standing for his team. While his group members struggled significantly with the workload, Cole persevered with a level of dedication that was inspiring to watch. He remained thorough, asked thoughtful questions, and ensured the final presentation was of the best quality. Watching him shine under pressure proved that he does not just complete assignments; he takes immense pride in his scholastic achievement," said Marta Summitt, Crowley's Ridge Associate Professor & Academic Advisor
"I have served as an adjunct instructor for over 15 years and have taught hundreds of students. Certain students have distinguished themselves to the point of being memorable, and Cole is one of those students. He was always prepared and contributed thoughtfully to class discussions. His work ethic and dedication were very noticeable, and he is committed to his academic success," Angela B. Rice, Money and Baking Course Adjunct Instructor at Crowley's Ridge
On the court, Nichols helped lead the Pioneers to the quarterfinals of the AMC Championship. He appeared in 29 games, averaging 10.4 points per game, 5.0 rebounds per game and 2.9 assists per game while shooting 39.1 percent from the field, 39.2 from three-point range, 81.1 percent from the free-throw line. His performance earned him AMC Third Team All-Conference honors.
"In addition to his academic excellence, Cole has demonstrated his leadership skills, commitment to community service, and his ability to work well in a team environment. His strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with others have made him a valued member of his academic and athletic communities," concluded Chris Perkins Athletic Director and Head Basketball Coach at Crowley's Ridge
Beyond his accomplishments in academics and athletics, Nichols has also made a meaningful impact in the community. He helps organize and run basketball games at the Paragould Community Center, giving back through his passion for the game. On campus, he is a positive influence at student life events and is always willing to help create an engaging atmosphere for his fellow students.
"Cole's character is defined by a rare combination of traits: he is a true gentleman-polite, humble, and respectful-yet he possesses a fierce competitive spirit. This balance is a testament to his maturity. He leads by example, humbly showing his peers that one can be both a kind, helpful citizen and a driven competitor. Whether he is engaging with faculty or collaborating with classmates, his integrity and leadership are always on full display," shared Marta Summitt, Crowley's Ridge Associate Professor & Academic Advisor
