KANSAS CITY, Mo. – (Bracket) The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has announced the qualifiers and brackets for the 2018 Women's Tennis National Championships in Mobile, Ala. The 38th annual event is co-hosted by the University of Mobile and the Mobile Tennis Center.
The field consists of 12 automatic berths, 11 at-large selections and the host berth (University of Mobile). The 12 automatic berths were given to the champions of the conference and unaffiliated grouping tournaments.
The at-large teams were determined by the NAIA Tennis National Selection Committee (NSC). The NSC consists of one representative from each geographic area, a representative from the National Administrative Council (NAC), the president of the Tennis Coaches Association and two at-large members. The committee evaluated teams throughout the year on various criteria.
The bracket consists of 24 teams and is single elimination. The first round consists of eight matches starting at 8:30 AM. The top-eight seeds received a first-round bye and will begin action on May 16th at 9 AM for the women.
William Woods is the lone team from the American Midwest Conference to receive a berth in the women's championships. The Owls received an automatic berth as the champion of the unaffiliated grouping that features the American Midwest Conference and the Heart of America Athletic Conference.
The Lady Owls will be making its third-straight appearance at the national championship. The Owls finished the regular-season with a record of 16-6 and have not lost since April 22nd. The Lady Owls, who earned the No. 1-seed, will take on the Southwestern College Moundbuilders from Winfield, Kansas. The Moundbuilders are 19-2 overall and earned an automatic berth as the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Champion. Southwestern is the No. 23-seed. The winner will take on 7-seeded University of Northwestern Ohio on Wednesday at 9 AM.
